The Lunatic of One Idea is a continuation of and expansion upon the thematic concerns raised
by the earlier project, Some Uncertain Signs where artists were able to display their work both
outside of a gallery venue and within the realm of mass communication and advertising. Lunatic,
however, brings these aesthetic and ideological concerns even further from the confines of gallery
space, as the installation took place on a video wall inside a suburban shopping centre, where the
discourse of consumption is all encompassing.
This project provided an opportunity for artists to work with advanced communications
technology in an advertising context. With space provided by the Wall Network Inc, sixteen
video works were designed to accommodate a 36 monitor video-wall at Square One Shopping
Centre in Mississauga. The works were selected from more than eighty submissions and the
selection committee consisted of five collective members. Proposals chosen demonstrated a
desire to both make use of and engage with developments in advertising, rhetorical address and
information technology. Generally, the artists produced works which experimented with this new
audio-visual technology, while bringing their aesthetic perceptions to bear on its implications as
well as its geographical location.
